New space-themed children’s play area to open in shopping centre

VENTURE: Ben, Danielle, William and Oliver Roman

A space-themed children’s play area is set to open in the old first floor food court at Prospect Shopping Centre.

The Hull Story reported earlier this month how the new owner of the shopping centre plans to transform it into a “leisure destination”, with a food court on the outside.

It has now been announced the Little Astronauts play area is moving into the old food court, which has been empty for five years.

It will feature futuristic play equipment and be designed to accommodate children with special educational needs (SEN), including sensory-friendly areas. The 7,500 sq ft area will also offer Italian-inspired, family friendly meal options.

It will have its own dedicated glass lift from the ground floor of the shopping centre, and have a capacity of 300 people.

BROUGHT BACK INTO USE: The old food court

Little Astronauts is owned and will be run by Ben and Danielle Roman, who have two sons, William, 5, and two-year-old Oliver.

Ben said: “After visiting various local soft play and family entertainment centres with our boys, we noticed a real lack of quality and consistency.

“Many places we’ve been to don’t provide a fantastic experience for parents, with poor quality food and drink, uncomfortable seating, and play areas that are neither aesthetically pleasing or clean.

“We wanted a place where our kids could have fun and we could relax and enjoy the experience too.”

Dannielle said: “As parents of two young boys, Ben and I have often found ourselves struggling to find a nice place locally where we can enjoy a meal while our children play safely.

“We noticed a real gap in Hull city centre for a family-friendly venue that combines good healthy food with a safe, clean and fun play environment for the children.

“With Little Astronauts, we’re creating a space where families can come together, enjoy great food, and let their kids explore and play. We’re excited to offer something special to the families of Hull.”

Hull City Council has awarded £158,000 to the venture from the Government-backed Levelling Up Fund, which has been match funded by the company.

Little Astronauts will be open 9am-6pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am on Sundays. An opening date has not yet been announced.
