How iconic murals will feature in £96m Albion Square development

New images show how two historic murals will be preserved and exhibited as part of the £96m Albion Square development in Hull city centre.

The Fish Mural and the Sponge Mural, both currently situated on the upper floors of the former BHS building, will be removed from the site before being returned to form key cultural features as part of the plans.

The development will feature a mixture of residential, office and retail space, as well as a large urban woodland.

The Fish Mural will form part of an arcade entrance at the south of the site. The Sponge Mural will be situated to the north, at a gateway to the urban woodland.

Hull’s Three Ships Mural will also remain and be incorporated into the new development.

‘TRANSFORMATIVE’: Daren Hale

Councillor Daren Hale, leader of Hull City Council, said: “Through the preservation of these artworks, and of course the iconic Three Ships Mural, Hull’s history and cultural heritage will play an important role in Albion Square.

“The transformative development will link our rich history with our exciting future.”

The plans, which include solar panels, EV charging points and a cycle hub, will go to the city council’s planning committee for final approval in early 2022.

Demolition of the site is also set to begin in early 2022, with construction starting in 2023. The project is set to be completed in 2026.
