The Conquest of Bread
The Conquest of Bread is a Hull microbakery that takes its name from the 1892 book by the Russian Anarcho-Communist Pyotr Kropotkin and is inspired by his demand for ‘Well-Being for all’!
In particular, Kropotkin's call for well-being inspires baking ‘Solidarity Bread’ every bake day, which is at the heart of what The Conquest of Bread is all about - this is essentially a ‘pay it forward’ scheme, by which you can purchase a loaf for me to make and donate to someone in need, though bread is always available to people in need, whether or not it is paid for.
I bake weekly to donate via Beannie Food Bank and Hull Trades’ Council's Unity Shop.
The Conquest of Bread produces high-quality, nutritious, hand-made real bread for the local community.
A loaf of real bread costs more than a standard supermarket loaf, but it is considerably more filling, more nutritious, has no artificial additives or preservatives, is long-lasting, freezes well and is all-round excellent food made with care, patience and love!
The Conquest of Bread is just me, Catherine, baking bread in my family home.
As a one-woman show, I currently bake to order only on Tuesdays and Fridays (plus a mid-week bake of Solidarity Loaves for donation), for collection from Spring Bank West.
I generally bake a Large White Loaf and a ‘Country’ Loaf (a mixture of white, wholemeal and dark rye flours) on each bake day, plus three or four ‘specials’, such as Sourdoughs with added Cheese, Seeds, Sultana and Cinnamon or Olives; Focaccia; Rolls or Sweetened Buns.
I keep customers updated on the Shop All page on my website, on Facebook and Twitter, and via the email newsletter, which you can opt in to via the Contact Us page.
