Contractor sought to add technology to historic Spurn Lightship

HERITAGE ASSET: Spurn Lightship

By Simon Bristow

A contractor is being sought to install new graphics, technology and displays on board Spurn Lightship.

Hull Maritime is looking to appoint a contractor as restoration of the lightship nears completion. The historic vessel will return to a temporary berth in Hull Marina in the coming weeks.

The new installations will include projections, film, immersive sound, and graphics.

Stories of the lightship and what it was like to navigate the treacherous Humber estuary will be told as the ship becomes part of the city’s museums offer once again.

Gillian Osgerby, project director for Hull Maritime at Hull City Council, said: “By adding new displays and technology it means we can continue to tell the story of the lightship for all our visitors in many different ways.”

The lightship is expected to reopen to visitors in late summer at a new berth close to the Holiday Inn and Murdoch’s Connection.

The closing date for tenders is April 21 and information is available here with ID 65882.

The restoration of Spurn Lightship is part of Hull Maritime, a transformational project led by Hull City Council and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It encompasses the major refurbishment of Hull Maritime Museum and Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new visitor attraction at North End Shipyard, which will also be home for the restored former trawler Arctic Corsair.
