One of the UK’s oldest sight loss charities is holding a special birthday party today when it celebrates its 160th anniversary alongside the centenary of a service user.
Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire is hosting the joint celebration with Nita Vernon, who turns 100 this week.
Sight Support, based in Beverley Road, Hull, is dedicated to improving the lives of those with visual impairments through practical support, social opportunities, and access to essential resources. Established in 1864, the charity’s legacy is built on a commitment to inclusivity and independence for people living with sight loss.
This week’s dual celebration holds special significance as Nita Vernon, a valued service user for many years, celebrates her remarkable 100th birthday. Nita, who began receiving support from the charity almost 15 years ago, has been an inspiring presence within the charity’s community, benefiting from its services while contributing her own warmth, wisdom, and resilience.
Nita has witnessed many of the changes and advancements in sight loss services over the years, and her personal journey stands as a testament to the enduring impact of Sight Support’s work.
Nita said: “I’ve been part of Sight Support for many years now, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done for me. To celebrate 100 years alongside their 160th anniversary feels like a double blessing. They’ve been like a family to me.”
The 160th anniversary celebrations will include a special birthday party today when Nita will be the guest of honour with entertainment from one of her favourite local singers, Martin Jackson.
Alison Stannard, chief executive of Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire, said: “We are incredibly proud to celebrate 160 years of serving the local community. This milestone is a testament to the tireless work of our volunteers, staff, and supporters who have helped us provide vital services to thousands of people over the decades.
“It’s especially meaningful to celebrate this anniversary in the same week as Nita’s 100th birthday and we are honoured to have supported her over the years.”
Sight Support continues to offer a wide range of services, including emotional support, and activities to reduce social isolation. As it marks this milestone, the charity remains committed to expanding its reach and adapting its services to meet the evolving needs of people living with sight loss in the region.
