Pride in Hull will be celebrated with a new online exhibition from this weekend.

The annual event, which sees tens of thousands of people gather in Hull city centre to promote diversity and equality, is being celebrated with the new digital exhibition, called Pride in Our City.

It will feature people’s pictures, stories, videos and memories, as well as documenting individuals’ experiences of being part of the LGBT+ community.

Andy Train, co-vice chair of Pride in Hull, said: "This year, more than ever before, it’s vital that we stay connected with each other and are supported. This project is the start of a special relationship that will see more LGBT+ content in our local museums, history and treasure houses.

"For almost 20 years people have flocked to our award-winning annual celebration of LGBT+ life and have lots of happy memories and lovely experiences to share."

The exhibition will be hosted by Hull Museums, working with both Pride in Hull and sexual health organisation, Yorkshire MESMAC.

Craig Moody, community development worker at Yorkshire MESMAC, said: "This has been such an exciting project to work on, gathering people’s thoughts of why Pride is so important to our city.

"Getting to hear people’s memories of Pride and what makes it special to them is a great reminder of the impact that Pride in Hull has on so many people. After all, what would Pride in Hull be without the fabulous people of Hull who support the event year in, year out."

The launch of the online exhibition coincides with this weekend’s digital Pride in Hull event.

Pride in Hull 2020 Home Edition will begin with a special treat from Back to Ours at 8pm on Friday - The Big Dolly Parton Pride at Home Show on their Facebook page.

Then on Saturday, Pride in Hull’s Facebook page will include a host of surprises, with the Lord Mayor opening proceedings at 3pm, followed by performances from Lucy, last seen in State of the Arts’ production of RENT and on Pride’s stage last year, Husk, Sheila Diamond with songs from the divas, and Hull’s own Zara. There will also be a flag wave at 5pm.

BBC Radio Humberside’s Loren Fox takes over until 10pm with a night filled with special guests and Pride anthems.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: "For almost two decades, Pride in Hull has celebrated the LGBT+ community and developed into one of the country’s most prominent Pride events. The annual celebration brings out the best in our city, as well as reminding us of the challenges and injustices we still face.

"Unfortunately this year’s event, for obvious reasons, cannot take place in its familiar form, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Pride in Hull and the LGBT+ community.

"This fantastic online exhibition will showcase one of the city’s most successful and much-loved events, as well as highlighting the importance of equality, inclusion and acceptance."

Pride in Our City will be hosted on the revamped Humber Museums Partnership website from Saturday, July 25.
