Asbestos dumped near schools for second time

‘IRRESPONSIBLE’: Asbestos dumped near Preston Road

By Simon Bristow, Co-Editor

Hull City Council is appealing for information after asbestos was dumped near two east Hull schools, 15 months after a similar incident in the same area.

This deposit of asbestos was found on Monday, October 21 on land between Archbishop Sentamu Academy, in Preston Road, and Woodland Primary School in Flinton Grove.

As well as pointing out that fly-tipping is a crime, the council said “where it includes asbestos wastes, this extremely irresponsible act also has the potential to cause serious harm to health and the environment”.

Asbestos is classed as hazardous waste and strict controls are in place regarding its disposal at appropriate facilities with environmental permits. These are in place due to the fact asbestos can release cancer-causing fibres into the air and ground.

Residents are advised to stay away from the immediate area until the waste is removed. Meanwhile, the council is in the process of arranging the safe removal of the waste.

The council is urging anyone who has any information, or recognises the waste in the image, to come forward.

People who live and travel in the area are also being asked to check their dashcam and CCTV recordings to help identify who was responsible.

‘HAZARDOUS’: Asbestos dumped in Flinton Grove last year

Reports can be nade via the Hull City Council website or by calling 01482 300 300, quoting reference 470681.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “We would like the public to think whether they remember seeing anything suspicious, and if they do, to please contact us immediately.

“Likewise, if you recognise the asbestos waste in the image, and paid someone to dispose of it for you, please contact us. By cooperating, not only could you avoid a hefty fine, but it will help us take action against the person who has illegally dumped the waste.”

In July last year asbestos was dumped on a drain embankment near the entrance to Woodland Primary School.
