Have your say on the use of police powers and tackling hate crime

APPEAL: Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter

APPEAL: Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter

Volunteers are being recruited to help scrutinise and shape policing in Hull and the surrounding area.

Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter is appealing for people who would like to play a part in ensuring the force is working well and delivering the service it should to come forward.

Specifically, volunteers are required to join two new groups looking at the use of police powers and how the force deals with hate crime.

The Commissioner’s office is particularly keen to hear from people affected by the use of powers such as stop and search for the Use of Police Powers Scrutiny Group.

Members of the group will look at how officers have been carrying out these duties and whether they have been fair and proportionate.

For the Hate Crime Group, volunteers are needed who have personal experience of hate crime to effectively scrutinise the police response to reports where the perpetrator was motivated to commit an offence because of someone’s race, sex, ethnicity, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Both groups will help to inform the Independent Ethics and Scrutiny Board, which in turn will influence the Police and Crime Commissioner’s discussions with the Chief Constable and others.

Mr Hunter said: “Scrutiny of police operations by those they impact upon is a vital element in the broader oversight that a Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for.

“You could provide a unique insight or perspective that would otherwise be missed. Please consider helping me to help all our communities.

“You will provide the opportunity for the police to do things differently, to learn and to progress.”

Volunteers will be expected to attend either physical or online meetings four to six times a year. The Commissioner’s office will pay reasonable travel expenses and provide refreshments at meetings.
