An open letter to our readers: Why we hope you’ll become a Patron
Dear Reader,
We are today launching a Patron’s scheme and inviting you to support The Hull Story.
For just £2.50 a month, you can help us maintain and develop this independent journalism project dedicated to Hull.
We launched The Hull Story because we wanted to provide an alternative source of news in Hull, and provide a platform for some of the city’s best freelance writers and photographers.
We are a socially responsible publisher, committed to providing ethical public interest journalism dedicated to our great city. We operate to the highest editorial standards in both words and pictures.
One of our key objectives is helping to secure Hull’s legacy as a UK City of Culture by providing quality coverage of our arts and culture. We are also committed to supporting other independent ventures in Hull.
Our independence allows us to make our own editorial decisions - on the type of stories we publish, the line we take on a particular issue, and whether to support or challenge what happens in our ever-changing city.
In this we are always guided by a simple, fundamental question - what is best for Hull? In The Hull Story you will find a true friend to this city.
But that independence comes at a price. We are not part of a large media company, we don’t have a billionaire owner, and we are not funded by a licence fee. That means we need some support from the community we serve.
If you are new to The Hull Story and unfamiliar with our work, here are a few examples of the content we have produced since our online launch this summer:
‘Excitement, fear, and walkie-talkies from Argos’ – the inside story of the UK’s first two coronavirus cases. Exclusive interviews and pictures with the medics at Castle Hill Hospital who helped diagnose and treat them
‘I’m just an individual from the estates and I do the job I think people want me to’ – Exclusive words and pictures with city council leader Steve Brady as he reflects on one of the most enduring careers in local politics
‘The pandemic has brought us together and we can build on that’ – Exclusive interview and pictures with one of Hull’s most popular and accessible Lord Mayors, Coun Steve Wilson
‘We may have been complacent, but we have a duty to each other to fight this virus’ – Exclusive interview and pictures with city hospitals boss Chris Long on why Hull had the worst infection rates in the country. His only in-depth interview since the pandemic began
‘The inside story of catching a killer’ – Exclusive interview and pictures with former Detective Superintendent Paul Davison, as he reflects on leading the Rachel Moran murder investigation
If you value these stories and would like to see more, then please consider becoming a Patron of The Hull Story. Donations can also be made from as little as £5.
Thank you for reading. We wish you a safe and merry Christmas and invite you to join us on the next chapter of The Hull Story.
Keep it Hull. Keep it independent. And please support The Hull Story.
