New health trust Chair ‘privileged to take on role at critical time’

NEW CHAIR: Caroline Flint

NEW CHAIR: Caroline Flint

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s new Chair of the Board says she feels privileged to be taking on the role during “a period of significant challenge” for healthcare.

Caroline Flint will take up the post in September for an initial term of office of three years. She will succeed current Chair Sharon Mays, who is leaving the trust following the completion of her two terms of office.

Ms Flint has a wealth of experience from her 22 year-long career in politics as a Labour MP, from 1997 until 2019. She was the first woman MP for Don Valley and a Minister in five Government departments before serving in the Shadow Cabinet from 2010 to 2015.

Since leaving politics, she has held the role of Chair of the Institute for Prosperity Advisory Board and been an Associate for Global Partners Governance, as well as a media commentator on news and current affairs.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of community, inpatient and GP services across Hull, the East Riding and North Yorkshire, covering a population of 800,000.

It also provides a variety of health and social care services, including acute and forensic inpatient mental health, community mental health, child and adolescent mental health, primary care, substance misuse and learning disability services.

“I am delighted to be appointed to the role of Chair,” said Ms Flint. “I look forward to working with staff, the Council of Governors, the Trust Board and our partners to ensure that the trust continues to make a positive difference to our patients, service users and their families.

“During the current period of significant challenge for the NHS it is a critical time to take on the post and I feel privileged to be able to play my part to support the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.”

Ms Mays said: “I would like to welcome Caroline to the trust and I look forward to working with her through a period of transition.

“It has been an honour to lead the Board over the last seven years and I am pleased to be handing over a successful and thriving organisation to the new Chair.”

Michele Moran, Chief Executive at the trust, said: “I am delighted to welcome Caroline to Humber.

“Her experience and expertise will be valuable to help guide us as we move forward on our journey. I look forward to working with her at an important time for the NHS and for our organisation.

“I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Sharon Mays for two terms of leadership which has put us in a great position to build on the progress we’ve made over the last seven years.”
