Stories from one of the world’s great maritime cities will be told online from this weekend in Hull’s first Maritime Tales Week.

It will feature stories inspired by the city’s rich maritime heritage, its collections, buildings and vessels.

The activities are being delivered by the Hull Maritime project, and will all be online and available through social media due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The week of story-telling, craft activities, interviews, and films will explore many moving and fascinating stories.

It will also include details of the £30m project to transform Hull Maritime Museum, Dock Office Chambers, North End Shipyard, Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship.

Organisers said: “Hull is one of the great maritime cities of the world, a place where ships and seafarers have come and gone for hundreds of years, leaving in their wake countless stories of excitement, danger, loss and triumph.”

As part of the programme, theatre company, Theatre on the Edge, will give a four-part performance following the harrowing voyage of the Hull whaling ship, The Diana.

They are also preparing a special performance for primary schools in which Captain Gravill, the commander of The Diana, will answer questions sent by local pupils.

People will also have the chance to hear poems written by the Hull Maritime Museum’s new Poet-In Residence, along with stories from Hull’s fishing industry.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration, planning, land and property, said: “This is the first Maritime Tales Week and while sadly we are unable to deliver the programme at locations across the city, there will be plenty of fun maritime-themed activities, tales and videos for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.”

Activities will be shared via @HullMaritime at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and the maritimehull.co.uk website.

The programme will run from Saturday, October 24 to Sunday, November 1.
