‘Tell our rich story’: Volunteers wanted for Hull Maritime project

TELLING THE STORY: Hull Maritime volunteers

By Simon Bristow

Hull Maritime is on the lookout for volunteers to be part of the city’s new maritime experience.

Following extensive restoration, the first of Hull’s maritime treasures – Spurn Lightship – will re-open to visitors, seven-days-a- week, later this year and volunteers will support the running of the lightship.

Maritime volunteers will talk to visitors about the vessel’s history and dramatic story as well as raising awareness of the significant role it played on the Humber. There will also be other exciting Hull Maritime opportunities on offer including new object-handling sessions at museum sites.

People who are interested in being part of Hull’s maritime story will sign up to be a HEY! Volunteer, the programme that was launched for Hull’s tenure as UK City of Culture in 2017 and was a major success. New volunteers will also have access to opportunities across the HEY! volunteering offer.

Councillor Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is an exciting time for Hull Maritime as the first element is nearing completion and ready to reopen and welcome visitors. Volunteers will play an important role in promoting Hull and telling our rich story and this is a great way to get involved and be part of the journey.

“We’re looking for people who are passionate about our wonderful city and love connecting with people to tell the story of the Spurn Lightship, a vessel that played a key role in our maritime story by navigating ships along the Humber Estuary.”

People who are interested in becoming a volunteer can submit their interest now, with the application window closing on Monday, July 31.
