Hull Maritime: Visitor numbers on guided tours up by 50 per cent
By Simon Bristow
Hull’s maritime guided tours have seen a 50 per cent increase in visitors during 2023.
Running between February and November every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, a team of accredited White Badge tour guides welcomed more than 660 people on maritime guided walks.
As part of the one-mile circular walk, visitors learn about the city’s rich maritime history, how the city has been shaped by its past and the latest on the Hull Maritime project.
Councillor Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said: “Seeing a 50 per cent increase in people joining the guided walks is a testament to the tour guides and their dedication to delivering the guided walks, showcasing our wonderful city centre and telling stories of our past.
“These walks are perfect for residents wanting to discover more about their city and those who are visiting the city.
“Plans are now under way on improving the walks further for when they restart early in 2024.”
Ian Martin, volunteer White Badge tour guide, said: “On the whole I love showing people around our great city, but what stands out the most is when the people who accompany me on the tours are just as enthusiastic as I am.
“A perfect example was the last tour I did when this lovely couple from Norfolk who had come to Hull on their first ever visit were full of praise for its architecture, history and the friendliness of the people. They said they couldn't wait to visit us again and will do so next year and want to come on another tour.”
The walks will restart on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
The walks are part of Hull Maritime, a major regeneration programme funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Elements include the restoration of Spurn Lightship and Arctic Corsair at North End Shipyard, and the transformational refurbishment of Hull Maritime Museum and Dock Office Chambers.
