Local Elections 2024: Lib Dem celebrations muted as Labour gains ground

WINNER: Hull City Council leader Mike Ross, who held his Beverley and Newland ward seat for the Liberal Democrats

By Angus Young

A night which began with an emergency evacuation from the Guildhall ended with the Liberal Democrats retaining control of the city council but with a reduced majority.

An accidentally-triggered alarm triggered the early drama and briefly disrupted the count.

By the end of the evening, the Lib Dems were down to 31 seats [from 33] with Labour on 26 [from 24] after an election which saw a 21.01 per cent turnout.

The Lib Dems gained a seat from Labour with Mark Collinson winning in University ward.

But three Labour gains in North Carr, Derringham and Avenue ensured Lib Dem celebrations remained muted.

Lib Dem leader Councillor Mike Ross, who retained his seat in Beverley and Newland, said the overall result showed people had faith in his party’s stewardship of the council.

“They have seen what the Lib Dems have to offer and they want more of that,” he added.

The most notable Lib Dem casualty was John Robinson who lost to Karen Wood in Avenue ward and was due to be the next Lord Mayor of Hull.

RESURGENT: Hull Labour cut the Lib Dems’ majority to five seats

Elsewhere, Labour newcomers George Grazov and Paul Harper won in Derringham and North Carr respectively.

Labour leader Councillor Daren Hale, who was re-elected in St Andrews and Dockland, said: “It’s a very good night for the Labour Party.

“The Lib Dems are on notice. Labour will be back in power in a couple of years.”

With no council elections in Hull next year, Labour will have to wait until 2026 to see whether that prediction will come true.

  • Jonathan Evison, Conservative, was re-elected as Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.
