‘People trust us to deliver’: Hull Lib Dems strengthen grip on city council

INCREASED MAJORITY: Hull’s Liberal Democrats, with leader Mike Ross front centre, celebrate their success at the Guildhall last night

By Angus Young

The Liberal Democrats have strengthened their grip on power at Hull City Council.

The party gained three seats in the annual council elections to establish an overall seven-seat majority over Labour.

Newcomers Garreth Byrne and Sherilee Jepmond took previously Labour-held seats in North Carr and Longhill respectively, while former Lib Dem councillor Sarita Robinson won in Derringham ward in a seat vacated by non-aligned Ryan Langley.

The result means the Lib Dems now have 32 seats to Labour’s 25.

Lib Dem leader Mike Ross said: “It’s been an excellent night for us. These results show people trust the Liberal Democrats to deliver.”

Despite Labour doing well nationally, the party’s fortunes in Hull show little sign of getting better anytime soon.

Labour also had to fight off strong Lib Dem challenges in Orchard Park and Ings, which would normally be regarded as traditional strongholds.

Labour’s Gary Wareing, who squeezed home in Orchard Park, urged voters not to forget the Lib Dems’ role in the coalition government in a fiery speech which brought proceedings to a close at the late-night count.

As expected, none of the other parties fielding candidates came close to even threatening to win a seat, including a full slate of Conservatives.

WINNER: Garreth Byrne wins North Carr for the Lib Dems in one of three gains for the party

A citywide turnout of just 22.01 per cent is thought to be one of the lowest ever for a council election in Hull.

Yesterday’s Local Elections were the first time voters in England were required to produce photographic ID to vote.
