Jason Whincup murder: Police plea for help to catch killer
By Rick Lyon
Detectives investigating the murder of Jason Whincup are appealing to anyone in the Hessle Road and Gipsyville community with information to come forward.
Jason, 47, suffered fatal stab wounds on Hessle Road at around 8.40am on Wednesday, August 31. He was rushed to hospital for treatment, but died from his injuries on Friday, September 2.
Three people have been arrested so far, but police have appealed directly to anyone in the area who has information that could bring his killer to justice to get in touch as soon as possible.
Detective Superintendent Craig Nicholson, the officer leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with Jason’s family at this very difficult time, and I can assure them that we will do everything in our power to bring the person responsible for his death to justice.
“There remains an increased police presence around Hessle Road, and in Pickering Park too, as we continue to explore all lines of enquiries in connection with Jason’s death.
“I would reassure the community that as part of our enquiries three people have been arrested in connection with this investigation and the circumstances surrounding it, and those people are helping us with our enquiries.
“I want to reiterate that we do not believe this incident to have been of any wider risk to the public and that incidents of this nature remain extremely rare in our area. But it goes without saying that anyone carrying a knife in our communities poses a serious danger, not only to others but to themselves.
“I am appealing directly to those in the Hessle Road and Gipsyville community to come forward with anything that would help with our investigation. Information is out there, and I would ask for people to get in touch with us and tell us what they know.
“If they don’t feel happy calling the police for whatever reason, then I would ask them to call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Information provided to them can be provided totally anonymously and there could be a reward for that information.
“I hope that our appeals will encourage people to provide intelligence and evidence to the investigation that will help bring Jason’s killer to justice.”
Anyone with information can contact the police directly by calling the non-emergency number 101, quoting log 806 of August 31.
