Jason Whincup murder: Police appeal to identify cyclist on CCTV

APPEAL: Police want to speak to this cyclist

By Rick Lyon

Detectives investigating the murder of Jason Whincup have released a CCTV image of a cyclist they are trying to trace.

Jason, 47, suffered fatal stab wounds on Hessle Road at around 8.40am on Wednesday, August 31. He was rushed to hospital for treatment, but died from his injuries on Friday, September 2.

Four people have been arrested so far, and officers have appealed directly to anyone in the area who has information that could bring Jason’s killer to justice to get in touch as soon as possible.

Now, Humberside Police have released an image of an individual they want to speak to as part of the investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Elliott, the senior investigating officer [SIO] in the case, said: “Over the weekend hundreds of hours of CCTV footage has been reviewed and we have one image of a cyclist we would like help in identifying.

“If you know who this man is please get in touch with us.

“I can update that the three men arrested for the circumstances surrounding the incident have now been released from custody. One man has been released without further action, the other two released under investigation in relation to an incident prior to the murder.

VICTIM: Jason Whincup

“Following our recent appeals, we have been provided with very helpful information from the public. As a result of this, a fourth man has been arrested in connection with the circumstances surrounding the murder.

“But we still need help from the public, firstly to identify the man shown on the CCTV image, but also from anyone who has any information, no matter how small, that might assist with our enquiries.

“There continues to be a heavy police presence in the area of Pickering Park where searches of the water continue. If anyone has any concerns, then please talk to our officers at the scene.”

Anyone with information that could identify the man shown should call the non-emergency number 101, quoting log 86 of August 31.
