Hymers College reaches national rugby final

Hymers College’s U15 rugby team has beaten six teams from across the country to reach the England Rugby National Plate final.

The annual England Rugby National Schools tournament sees over 650 teams from across the country compete for the opportunity to play at an international stadium for the coveted title.

Hymers hosted Oundle School in the semi-finals in a very close match, showing real resilience to win 22-21. They will now face Cranleigh School in the final on Tuesday, March 12, competing at StoneX Stadium in North London, home to Premiership team Saracens.

Justin Stanley, headmaster at Hymers College, said: “I am delighted for the players and our sports staff. We have a rich sporting history here at Hymers, especially when it comes to rugby, and making it to the final is a wonderful way to recognise the hard work and dedication that has been put into the boys’ training.”

Steve Walmsley, director of sport at the school, said: “We are incredibly proud of all of the players. They are a fantastic bunch who demonstrate true commitment and camaraderie.

“We last made it to the final in 2019 and this year we’re hoping to go one better and bring the National Plate home to Hull.”

With a long history of sporting excellence, the school’s alumni include rugby players Simon Hammersley, Rob Vickerman and Kaya Acton, who was called up to play for England’s Under 18 team against Ireland last weekend.

Hymers College is a co-educational independent school in Hull for students aged three to 18.
