Hull riot: Police release images of 16 suspects
By Simon Bristow, Co-Editor
Police have issued images of 16 suspects they wish to speak to in connection with widespread disorder in Hull on Saturday.
The appeal comes as warnings of a second gathering of far-right agitators in the city centre tonight failed to materialise.
Humberside Police have so far made 35 arrests after a rampaging mob wreaked havoc in the city centre on August 3, looting shops, attacking a hotel believed to house asylum seekers, and also damaging property and setting fire to a car in the Spring Bank area.
As the force continues its “relentless” hunt for those involved, it has now appealed for help in identifying 16 suspects, who are pictured below.
Anyone with information can call the non-emergency 101 number quoting Op Executive, or give it directly to the investigation team in confidence through the major incident public portal here.
On Monday, a list of 39 “targets” across England began circulating on social media, mainly aimed at immigration lawyers and advice services.
It prompted police to prepare their biggest national public order response since the widespread riots of 2011, with about 6,000 riot-trained officers on duty across the country, and with the list of far-right “protests” having grown to 100.
But when the allotted hour came at 8pm, the Savile Street area of Hull, where the gathering had been supposed to take place, was deserted, barring a watchful police presence.
Small pockets of young teenagers, some with masked faces, wandered aimlessly about.
Humberside Police had also used its social media channels to quash rumours of disorder throughout the day; in Hessle Road and the city centre, as well as in Grimsby.
