How INEOS is helping its staff embrace a healthy lifestyle
ADVERTORIAL
INEOS Acetyls is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of its workforce.
The global chemicals company, based at Saltend Chemicals Park, on the outskirts of Hull, runs programmes and initiatives to encourage its staff to be active and make healthy choices. From joining the INEOS team in the Run For All Hull 10K, to participating in monthly health and wellbeing challenges, there is a huge variety to get involved with.
For INEOS, a healthy team is a happy, productive and safe team.
A key aspect of the drive by INEOS to support the health and wellbeing of its workers is its dedicated INEOS Energy Station platform.
Through Energy Station, colleagues are encouraged to access advice and guidance, as well as take part in fun and motivational challenges unique to INEOS.
Alexa Chilton, INEOS Energy Station project manager, said: “We wanted a community of employees that embrace a healthy lifestyle, helping unlock their full potential – both inside and outside of the workplace.
“The number one priority for INEOS is safety – it always has been and it always will be. For us, a healthy workforce is a happy, productive and safe workforce. If colleagues are taking care of themselves, it will reduce the risk of injury or incident.”
The Energy Station project was created in 2017 and acts as a global programme to connect all sites across the world. It’s an online portal giving employees access to fitness and wellbeing tips, with a different focus each month, as well as class timetables for INEOS gyms (based at sites/offices).
The fun fitness and wellbeing challenges are also an important feature of the Energy Station.
INEOS has links to numerous sports teams around the world – in running, cycling, sailing, rugby, and football – and the business uses challenges to connect colleagues across the sites and encourage healthy competition and team building. The challenges see thousands of colleagues take part.
The most popular challenge to date has been the Tour de France one. As a team of up to 25 participants, employees collectively cycle the same distance each day of the Tour de France.
“We have leaderboards that show how many kilometres have been cycled. INEOS is very focused on inclusive challenges and activities, so people can use any type of bike to get involved and they don’t have to cycle every day – they can just do one day out of the 21 days of the Tour de France if they want,” explained Alexa.
“It’s about encouraging colleagues to get involved in whatever capacity they can and are comfortable with.”
Furthermore, the challenges present an opportunity for staff and their supporters to raise money for local charities.
For example, any team that completes all 21 stages of the Tour de France (remotely) receives a £1,000 donation for a local charity of its choice.
The team in Hull made its donation to The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation – a charity which works to raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death in the young and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training, primarily for grassroots sporting teams.
“It’s about giving something back to the local community,” said Alexa.
“If there’s a local charity that’s close to a colleague’s heart, they can put it forward to receive a donation.
“It’s not just making INEOS a better place to work, it’s helping make our workforce healthier and happier people too.”*
