Local Elections 2023: Countdown begins to May 4 poll for Hull City Council

The countdown to the 2023 Local Elections has begun after Matt Jukes, Hull City Council chief executive and elections Returning Officer, today published the Notice of Election in the Guildhall.

The pre-election period is now underway and runs until the polls close at 10pm on Thursday, May 4.

There are local elections in 19 out of Hull’s 21 wards, with Bricknell and University wards not having elections this year.

Mr Jukes said: “With this year’s local elections fast approaching, I’d like to encourage all residents who aren’t already registered to vote to do so. In particular, any residents who have moved house, changed their name or turned 18 in the last year may need to register so that they are able to vote.

“It is also important to remind electors that from this year they will need to show photo ID to vote at a polling station or, of course, you can register for a postal vote.

“It has never been more important to vote, and these local elections are the opportunity for residents to have their say on who represents them on Hull City Council, dealing with decisions and issues that directly affect day-to-day life in Hull.”

Accepted forms of ID include a passport, photocard driving licence, blue badge and some concessionary bus passes. A full list can be found here.

Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for free ID online here or by visiting the Wilson Centre in Hull city centre.

Alternatively, anyone without ID can apply to vote by post. Application forms are available here.

The deadline to register to vote is Monday, April 17 and it takes five minutes online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Poll letters will be issued to all registered electors in wards with elections from today.

The deadline for new postal vote applications or for changes to an existing postal or proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday, April 18. The deadline for new proxy vote applications is 5pm on Tuesday, April 25.

The deadline to apply for a free voter authority certificate is 5pm on Tuesday, April 25.
