Clean sweep: City council takes top prize at Keep Britain Tidy Awards

WINNERS: The Hull City Council team on stage at the Keep Britain Tidy Awards

A city council campaign to keep Hull clean has won the biggest prize at this year’s Keep Britain Tidy Awards.

The Love Your Street project won the Outstanding Service Delivery award for its commitment to making the city cleaner and tidier.

The award was presented in a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool.

The Keep Britain Tidy Awards celebrate the achievements of local authorities, communities and organisations that work to keep their local environments clean, safe and sustainable.

Hull’s award recognises “a project or initiative that has shown a significant improvement to service delivery, making a measurable improvement in local environmental quality”.

The Love Your Street project is an innovative partnership between the council’s waste management and insight teams, which works to improve environmental and housing standards in the city.

Using an intelligence-led approach, the project identifies priority areas where additional engagement is needed to help people ‘put waste in the right place’.

The dedicated Love Your Street team engages with local communities and empowers them to take ownership of and improve their surroundings.

This project has inspired residents to get more involved in street-cleaning activities such as litter-picking and has made a noticeable difference in the targeted areas, the council said.

Councillor Julia Conner, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said: “This award is fantastic news and recognises the hard work the Love Your Street team delivers on a daily basis to help make Hull’s communities cleaner, greener and safer.

“The council has put people at the heart of this project by engaging with the public in their communities and online through the People’s Panel.

“We will continue to work with residents and listen to their feedback as the project evolves.”
