‘It’s all about singing for joy’: Carefree Singers Club launched
By Simon Bristow
People who like to sing just for the fun of it are being invited to take part in a new monthly singing club run by “Vintage Songstress” Ruth Getz.
Ruth is launching the Carefree Singers Club at Union Mash-Up on Princes Avenue in west Hull, with the first gathering on Thursday, March 23, from 7.30pm.
The vocalist used to run The Vintage Sing-Up at the same venue, which ran for four years from 2016 until halted by the Covid pandemic.
Announcing the new venture, Ruth said: “This new group will be similar in many ways apart from that we will now be singing songs from all eras right up to present day.
“The group is all about singing for joy. No ability or experience is required. It’s completely informal and there is no focus on performance, which means no rehearsals and no particular commitment is required. We’ll start with a few fun vocal warm-ups and then go on to the singing, which will generally be very well loved classic numbers, nothing too obscure.
“The lyrics will be on screen and music will be mainly backing tracks, although there possibly may be an element of live music.”
She added: “The reason I’m starting this again now is that I’m feeling like, post-Covid, the time is absolutely right for people to get together and sing - it’s such a unifying, uplifting and positive experience and instills a sense of community.
“Apart from the Sing-Up I’ve also run singing sessions with other organisations - the Alzheimer’s Society, Dove House Hospice, Home from Hospital, The Forget Me Nots (a social group for vulnerable people run by Back To Ours). Through this experience I’ve found the benefits of singing as a group to be really incredible - including friendship-forming, boosting confidence, and someone even told me once that after a singing group they had slept for the first time in months!”
Entry costs £8 in advance or £10 on the door. To book or find out more, email info@ruthgetz.co.uk, or call 07956 661422.
