More than 250 young riders will be heading to Bishop Burton College next week as it hosts the British Eventing International Youth Championships.

The annual Regional Youth Team Championships are normally open to riders under 18; however, for 2021, due to the impact of Covid-19, riders can be selected for the teams up to the age 19.

The five-day event runs from Wednesday, July 28 to Sunday, August 1 and features numerous dressage, cross country and show jumping classes.

Ann Paling, Assistant Principal at the college, near Beverley, said: “We are delighted to host the International Youth Championships and the choice of the college is testament both to the high standard of our equine facilities and to the expertise of our team in running similar events, such as our biannual horse trials.

“Excitement is building across the regions and competition is bound to be extremely keen. We are sure all will enjoy our new cross country course, where course designer Joe Weller has made the best use of our magnificent parkland.”

The event will welcome spectators in line with the easing of Covid restrictions, although the college is still taking precautions to safeguard both competitors and visitors, including additional hygiene measures.

Bishop Burton, which offers a wide range of further education and higher education courses, as well as apprenticeships, has also arranged various opportunities and experiences for the competitors and their families.

These include tours of the animal management facilities, a science lab demonstration of equine leg anatomy, yoga and laser shooting, which is ideal for those who also take part in pentathlon, as well as numerous social events.

There will also be a number of trade stands and admission to the championships is free.

Sponsors of the event include Baileys Horse Feeds, Porsche Centre Hull, East Riding Council and Bedmax. The Event Horse Owners Association (EHOA), Smailes Goldie Group and CR Reynolds Group are also key supporters.
