Overnight closures on A63 as part of £355m Castle Street upgrade

WORK IN PROGRESS: The A63 looking east

By Simon Bristow

Drivers are being advised to allow more time for journeys as overnight closures are introduced on the A63 in Hull for work on the Castle Street improvements.

The westbound carriageway between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way will be closed for five nights from Wednesday, January 11 until the morning of Monday, January 16. Closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am.

This is to allow resurfacing on Myton swing bridge and the replacement of  expansion joints in the westbound carriageway. The joints help bridges move under the stresses and strains of traffic and during changes in temperature.

From Monday, January 16, the A63 will then be closed in both directions for five nights from 8pm to 6am between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. This is to allow for testing around Daltry flyover ahead of barrier and lighting work starting this year.  Ground stabilisation work will also be completed near the eastbound carriageway.

Fully-signed diversions will be in place during the closures.

National Highways is lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction to create a new split-level junction. This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port, it said.

The developments are part of the £355m A63 Castle Street scheme, creating better connections for Hull city centre. Engineers are also carrying out essential repairs to the landmark Myton swing bridge, which carries the A63 over the River Hull.

In November, National Highways carried out the first of its traffic switches, moving traffic west of Commercial Road. This enabled work to progress on a new underpass wall on the northern side of the Mytongate junction.

OUTWARD BOUND: The A63 looking west

The second part of the switch will move traffic east of Commercial Road to the south of the junction.

This will mean that from Saturday, January 28, the A63 will be closed in both directions between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way between 8pm and 6am. The closures will be in place each night until Friday, February 10.

Switching the traffic to the opposite side of the junction will enable the creation of the new underpass wall on the northern side.

The Castle Street scheme will see further milestones during 2023. Over the next three months, work will also continue to create a pumping station and the new retaining wall next to the Holiday Inn at Hull Marina. This will take place during the day.

Further work includes:

  • A new footpath that runs alongside Modern Courts from High Street to Market Place.

  • The continuation of the building of the new underpass for the A63.

  • Preparation work around the A63 Daltry flyover for the underpass.

This work will be carried out during the day. Planned overnight work includes:

  • Barrier and lighting work on Daltry flyover

  • Resurfacing work from the Holiday Inn towards Sewer Lane in February.

The Castle Street scheme is expected to be complete by 2025.  You can follow the scheme’s progress via a dedicated webpage here.
