This year’s Freedom Festival will be headlined by renowned circus artists, it has been announced.

The festival, held from Wednesday, August 28 to Sunday, September 1, will once again entertain audiences in Hull city centre with a variety of shows and performances.

It will feature headline performances of Eternity by Australian theatre company C!rca at Hull Minster on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The circus artists will explore powerful emotions through dramatic acrobatics and delve into themes of love, death, loss, hope and wonder, accompanied by music from the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Numerous other performances and installations will take place at locations including Princes Dock Street, Queen Victoria Square, Zebedee’s Yard and Hull Truck Theatre.

Following the success of Freedom on Tour last year, Freedom Festival Arts Trust is also again partnering with East Riding Council to bring a day of free cultural entertainment to Bridlington on the Friday.

However, due to a lack of funding, Freedom Festival this year will not feature a major outdoor evening performance, as it has in previous years.

Jo Hawkes, interim CEO and general manager of Freedom Festival Arts Trust, said: “All of our outdoor work is free as we aim to make this year’s Freedom Festival accessible to as many people as possible.

“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support from Hull City Council, the Arts Council and the University of Hull, as well as our major business sponsors. But this year, it has proved very difficult financially and it hasn't been possible to curate a large-scale outdoor evening performance.

“However, we believe that Freedom on Tour and our diverse line-up of events more than make up for this, offering a truly unforgettable celebration of the human experience through artistic expression.”
